To Our Guests:
Sunbury House is intended to be a retreat space. As such, we have established a bit of structure and some house rules that facilitate daily routines for breakfast and afternoon tea and a peaceful, uncluttered common area.
Our guest accommodations are on different floors, separated by the common area on the first floor. The common area serves as a buffer for sound and a peaceful space for the community to share as they wish.
The two suites are each pretty much self-contained, including private balconies with forest views and no other houses in site. Guests can choose when and how they would prefer to interact in the common area, including the common area kitchen and laundry, which are available at all times and are located on the first floor.
To maintain the spirit of the common area space, we ask that our guests comply with the following:
o Do not leave personal belongings in the common area.
o Be respectful of others in the common area and after 9pm observe quiet time.
o Feel free to invite guests to join you in the common area, but first please check with me, your host.
Daily Structure
Mornings
Hi! Patricia here. As your host, my role is to serve as the Sunbury House community manager. I live on-site in separate quarters and work in my backyard studio, but I am responsible for providing a breakfast tray for each suite (locally sourced continental breakfast) in the morning at 8:30am.
Afternoons
I put out tea at 4:30 each afternoon in the common area, and I serve local wines and cheeses and such on Fridays. Since we’re right by the ocean, the fog often rolls in late in the day and if it’s foggy and damp in the afternoon, I will make a fire in the fireplace using oak wood from the property to warm up the house for the start of the evening. I generally spend about half an hour at tea by the fire with my two golden retrievers: you are welcome to join us!
Fridays
On Fridays, local artists or musicians will drop by for our wine and cheese and it’s a great opportunity for our guests to discover the local art scene and get a feel for Cambria’s culture. The house is a short walk from Moonstone Cellars (for wine tasting), Farmer’s Market, and the art galleries in the West Village, which is also fun on Fridays.
Saturday Morning Cleaning
Weekly cleaning staff arrive on Saturday mornings to clean the common area. Floors and carpets are steamed and sterilized monthly, also usually on Saturday mornings. I will remind you of this, and if you wish, your suite can also be cleaned at that time. I offer coffee and pastries in my art studio under the oak trees on Saturday mornings for folks who want to stay on site, and sometimes local musicians or artists stop by, too. Either way, should you decide to take off for an outing on Saturday morning, I will be here to make sure your stuff is safe and the house is clean.
My Routine as Community Manager and Artist in Residence
A peek into my daily routine:
Walking the hounds and birdwatching!
My own daily schedule typically incorporates two dog walks at the beach (you’re welcome to join if you wish!) and local evening yoga and dance classes (also open for you to join), in addition to general errands and other running around town. So even though I am always available to you by phone, I am often away from the house with just the two points of contact (breakfast and tea-time) if you prefer more privacy.
In this way, the sights and sounds of the magnificent pine forest surrounding the house and the pulse of the waves crashing on the beach at Moonstone are your daily companions as you compose your day at Sunbury House.
See you soon!
